southwestNET: drawing outside the lines

Drawing is perhaps the most intimate artistic form, a manifestation of the artist’s thought process at work. The act of drawing—of mark-making—documents the very movement of the artist’s hand and body, with a special sense of immediacy and a tangible presence. southwestNET: drawing outside the lines looks at the greatly-expanded practice of drawing today, in the hands of contemporary artists who do not confine themselves to the limited scale or the two-dimensionality of paper. The drawings in this exhibition—some as much as 65-feet long—take surprising new forms. Here, the artists’ interest in the beauty of the drawn line dovetails with explorations of performance, community-based collaboration, installation and conceptual art. The exhibition includes many new works made especially for this occasion.

Even as many of these artists thwart traditional expectations of drawing, the act of drawing remains fundamental to their process. Drawing carries with it historical links to representation, to rendering, to preparatory studies, to diagramming, to mapping, to plotting and to documentation. The artists in this exhibition engage with a similarly wide range of content, for example: Edgar Arceneaux addresses urban experiences; Martin Soto draws with leaves gathered on a walk to make an experiential map; Jen Urso tackles environmentalism; Chris Sauter looks at the role of the spectator.

southwestNET: drawing outside the lines is the eleventh in SMoCA’s ongoing “southwestNET” series, which showcases the work of contemporary artists in the southwest, including Mexico. It features works by Edgar Arceneaux (Los Angeles); Angela Ellsworth (Phoenix); Karen Kimmell (Los Angeles); Adria Pecora (Scottsdale); Deborah Salac (Phoenix); Chris Sauter (San Antonio, TX); Matthew Sontheimer (Houston); Jen Urso (Phoenix); Steven Yazzie (Phoenix); and Martín Soto (Mexico City).

Curated by Cassandra Coblentz.

Organized by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Sponsored by the SMoCA Salon.
