Art is sustaining us—nourishing our souls—during this difficult time. Our facilities may be closed as we do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19, but our hearts are filled with a desire to share the power and grace of the arts with you. Please join Dr. Jennifer McCabe, director and chief curator of SMoCA for a short visit to the colorful local art studio of artist Fausto Fernandez. 

Known for his large-scale multi-media paintings and site-specific installations, artist Fausto Fernandez has an eye for color and pattern. The Mexican American artist was born in El Paso, Texas, and lived in neighboring Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, until age 25. In his Phoenix studio, he works in mixed media collage, incorporating photography and found objects with more traditional mediums. He layers the identifiable subjects with abstract elements in dense arrangements, resulting in large compositions that serve as metaphors for human interaction. 

Fernandez has served on the SMoCA Advisory Council since 2019 and had planned a studio tour with Scottsdale Arts for April 2020. The event was to be the third in the series SMoCA in the Studio, which invites guests for behind-the-scenes experiences in artist studios and collector’s homes. Fernandez generously opened his studio doors in mid-May for a private visit to be published online.
