Our newest exhibition Division of Labor: Women Shifting a Transnational Gaze features artists Ammi Robles (Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico) and the DouglaPrieta Trabajan (DPT) (Douglas, Arizona and Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico) along with Arizona-based artists M. Jenea Sanchez and Gabriela Muñoz, which continues our mission to exhibit more women artists. We like to highlight the many talented and remarkable women artists, some of which have been featured in solo exhibitions, part of a group exhibition at SMoCA, and exhibited internationally. To celebrate and empower women for Women’s History Month, here are a few of my personal picks from our Women’s History Month collection on our online store and in person at the Shop@SMoCA that you can purchase to celebrate women all month long.
From May 18 – Oct. 13, 2019, SMoCA presented southwestNET: Shizu Saldamando. This incredibly unique and convention-shattering exhibition invited patrons to take a fresh look at the lives and identities of often overlooked communities through dynamic portraiture and video. Based in Los Angeles, Saldamando’s paintings, drawings, video installations, and performance works have been exhibited nationally. To learn more, check out the Shizu Saldamando catalog that features an artist biography, 20 color pages of artworks, an introduction written by curator and director of SMoCA, Jennifer McCabe, and a prologue by writer Raquel Gutiérrez. Unapologetic: All Women, All Year was a yearlong exhibition with works from SMoCA’s Collection that was on view from Feb. 15, 2020 – Jan. 17, 2021. The exhibition featured work by a diverse group of women artists and highlighted the need for more female inclusivity in the artworld. These works took a bold, unapologetic look at topics such as identity, beauty, violence, and equality. Included in the exhibition were artists Judy Chicago, Yoko Ono, Louise Nevelson, Renee Cox, and Angela Ellsworth, to name a few. To show your support of women artists and this remarkable exhibition, the Unapologetic tee in vintage black is a striking statement. Available in a variety of sizes at the Shop@SMoCA.
Truth Bomb: Inspiration from the Mouths and Minds of Women Artists written by Abigail Crompton is a vibrant and whimsical full color book with poignant, humorous, and inspirational stories and images. With works by established and emerging women artists, this book is sure to engage and delight.
200 Women by Geoff Blackwell, Ruth Hobday, et al. is a fascinating book of interviews. Two hundred women of different ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities were photographed and asked five fundamental questions. Their responses offer valuable insights and can spark your own meaningful conversations.
Heroic Women of The Art World written by Eugene H. Pool is an inspiring book for young readers which profiles 15 notable female artists from the Rennaissance to the present. A great gift for girls who are interested in the arts and women in history.
