“I paint two different ways. Sometimes I wait for this gift that’s just going to fall out of the sky into my lap, and that’s a starting place. But other times, I just paint the space between things. In this painting, I was painting the space between things – me and the painting. I was painting what I was doing at that very moment; I was being present at that very moment. Being present, whatever’s there goes on the canvas. I used this to kind of set up a narrative so there’s a structure underneath this non-representational piece. I travel with it; I let the marks might come up here, and then they might fall down another place, and then they might pool here. So, in a sense, I use this and what’s happening around to me to create the painting.” Sue Chenoweth
