In Our Time: Selections from the Singer Collection
Oct 1, 2022 - Feb 12, 2023
In Our Time is a focused look at 27 global contemporary artists from the Iris and Adam Singer Collection.
In Our Time: Selections from the Singer Collection includes a selection of paintings and works on paper collected by Iris and Adam D. Singer over the span of 16 years. Anchored by the work of 27 contemporary artists living and working in cities such as London, Beijing, New York, New Haven, Los Angeles, Accra, and Nairobi, In Our Time speaks to the immediacy of this moment on a global scale, as well as the key ideas, narratives, and concerns that artists have been exploring over the past 25 years. This selection of 40 paintings and works on paper includes a range of styles and approaches, careers from emerging to established, and themes both personal and ubiquitous.
The exhibition deconstructs the use of narrative, figuration, and abstraction in artworks by Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, Patrick Alston, Hurvin Anderson, Annan Affotey, Michael Armitage, Amoako Boafo, Mark Bradford, Dominic Chambers, Jadé Fadojutimi, Derek Fordjour, Alex Gardner, Rashid Johnson, Rachel Jones, Danielle McKinney, Wangechi Mutu, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Chris Ofili, Naudline Pierre, Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, Nathaniel Mary Quinn, Betye Saar, Tschabalala Self, Vaughn Spann, Genesis Tramaine, Zandile Tshabalala, Kehinde Wiley, and Michaela Yearwood-Dan. The exhibition features a site-specific commission of wallpaper by the artist Merryn Omotayo Alaka, specifically designed to complement the works and exhibition space.
