What is SMoCA?

A small-scale Museum devoted to contemporary art, architecture and design.

Is parking available?

Free, mostly covered parking is conveniently located next to the museum on Drinkwater Boulevard and Wells Fargo Avenue. Additional nearby parking is located at the Scottsdale Civic Center Library on Drinkwater Boulevard and 2nd Street.

How much is admission?

$10 adults, $7 students, seniors (65+) and veterans
Free for members and children under 15
Free on Thursdays and every second Saturday of the month

 

Do you have to be a Member to attend SMoCA’s Opening Celebrations?

SMoCA’s Openings happen three times per year in fall, spring, and summer. These events are free and open to the general public.

What is currently on display in the galleries at SMoCA?

SMoCA typically features 2–4 exhibitions each season that change roughly every three months during fall, spring and winter. Check the current exhibitions. SMoCA also houses a permanent James Turrell Skyspace in its outdoor courtyard that can be accessed during museum hours.

Is SMoCA appropriate for children and families?

Most of the exhibitions at SMoCA are both appropriate and recommended for children and families; however, occasionally we do show artworks with adult content. When this is the case, we inform visitors with signage in the Museum lobby and galleries. Interested in a family friendly tour? Contact us.

What is SMoCA’s accessibility?

A wheelchair is available for Museum visitors to borrow. Wall texts in large print are available at our front retail desk.

Is SMoCA open on holidays?

SMoCA is closed on major holidays and Mondays.

Is SMoCA open late?

SMoCA is open until 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Museum is free on Thursdays.

 

Does SMoCA have a café?

Although SMoCA does not have a café, take advantage of the many restaurants and bars directly surrounding the Museum’s art campus.

Can I bring food & drinks to SMoCA?

Food and drink are not allowed in the exhibition spaces where there is artwork present, but for some programs that take place in the SMoCA Lounge, food and drink are permitted.

Does SMoCA offer tours?

Does SMoCA allow photography?

Photography in some exhibitions and galleries is allowed for personal use only (flash, tripods, and selfie sticks are not allowed). Please check exhibition signage to see if photography is permissible. Use #SMoCA to tag your photos on social media. We just may follow you back!

Does SMoCA have a gift shop?

Yes! The Store@SMoCA offers classic design objects and furnishings, contemporary jewelry, art and architecture books and imaginative gifts for all occasions. Also, there is an additional gift store next door at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts building. Two great gift stores all on one campus!

What is the Young@Art Gallery?

The Young@Art Gallery is curated by the Scottsdale Arts Education and Outreach Department and is dedicated to the creative work of youth. It is located next door to SMoCA inside the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts building. Admission to the Young@Art Gallery is free and its hours are Monday – Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday: noon – 5:00 p.m.

What is SMoCA Lounge?

A mixed-used space in the Museum designed as a “living installation” for events, gatherings and presentations. For rentals, call 480.874.4604 or visit online. To contact the Curator of Programming about events, email JulieG@scottsdalearts.org.

Does SMoCA accept donations?

Yes. A donation box can be found in the Museum’s front lobby near the admission desk.

Does SMoCA have a rental program?

Yes! The Museum, the SMoCA Lounge and the outdoor James Turrell Skyspace are all available to rent for private events. Contact the Facility Rental Manager for more details at 480.874.4604 or AnneP@scottsdalearts.org.

Does SMoCA have a permanent collection?

Yes, SMoCA has a collection of about 2,000 artworks ranging from paintings and works on paper to decorative arts to video and sculpture. Visit our collection page to view a sampling. We have a permanent collection exhibition annually. For additional questions about the collection contact SMoCA@scottsdalearts.org.

How do you submit your artwork to SMoCA for consideration?

SMoCA does accept unsolicited artists submissions. Please see instructions on how to properly submit work here.

Also, if you are an Arizona artist interested in selling your work at the Shop@SMoCA, please email BillK@scottsdalearts.org.

Are there any special programs or events that I can enjoy during my visit?

Check our diverse events and consider adding a performance presented by our sister division, the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, to your visit!

How do I purchase event tickets?

All upcoming SMoCA events can be found on our Events page. Tickets can be purchased online or via phone at 480.499.8587.

Can I exchange or return tickets?

Tickets may be exchanged up to two days in advance of the event date for ticketed events that are processed by the Box Office.

There are no refunds –  i.e. no ticket “returns”

 

Can you reserve seating for SMoCA events?

All SMoCA events are general seating only. Free events sometimes require an RSVP to help the staff prepare for crowd numbers, but do not guarantee seating. Space is limited. First come, first served.
