Artist James Marshall (a.k.a. Dalek), recognized for his colorful geometric abstractions and often associated with skateboard and graffiti subcultures, was commissioned by SMoCA and Scottsdale Public Art to create murals for the Museum. Marshall (Dalek) is also known for his past apprenticeship with the renowned contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, whose style has been cited as a strong influence. SMoCA’s retail store, courtyard wall near the James Turrell Skyspace and SMoCA Lounge got fresh, new designs by Marshall in late May 2014.

In the fall of 2014, Marshall returned to Scottsdale to complete a third project with members of the community. Collectively, participants painted 1,344 wooden tiles, which are now assembled in an impressive mural in the Scottsdale Civic Center Bell Tower, just north of the Museum.
