Sherin Guirguis and Carrie Marill draw inspiration from the history of pattern-making in Arab and southwestern Native American cultures. Guirguis and Marill interweave Modernist tropes with traditional ornamentation, exploring each one’s formal qualities—color, line and texture. This cumulative process results in vibrant, stunning paintings and sculptures.

Sherin Guirguis (born 1974 in Luxor, Egypt; works and lives in Los Angeles, CA) creates elaborate paintings and sculptures. Her works combine Western minimalist aesthetics with Arabic calligraphic ornamentation.

Carrie Marill (born 1976 in San Francisco, CA; works and lives in Phoenix, AZ) makes paintings which are meticulous not only in technique, but also in concept. In this series she interlaces the theories of Modern painters, her personal image-making and the textile compositions of southwestern Native American cultures.
